Abstract

400,453. Cathode-ray tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES. FœR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE, 12, Hallesches Ufer, Berlin. Dec. 24, 1932, No. 36617. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] Cathode-ray tubes for use in television &c. or as oscillographs are provided, in addition to any control or concentrating electrodes such as the Wehnelt cylinder W, with a conductive "throttling" diaphragm B<1> in front of and immediately adjacent the cathode. K to suppress disturbing emission of electrons from hot parts of the cathode other than the oxide spot 0, and the diaphragm B<1> is so arranged and constructed that it does not itself emit electrons thermionically. To ensure this, a low temperature of the diaphragm relatively to that of the cathode during operation of the tube is secured by mounting the diaphragm not on the hot cathode, but on a cool leading- in wire for the cathode and the heater S as shown, and by forming the surface of the diaphragm as a black heat radiator. The diaphragm may also be coated with emissionsuppressing material such as tungsten, chromium or uranium oxide, or carbon or chromium. The diaphragm B<1> may be at the potential of the cathode K or positive or negative thereto. The indirectly-heated cathode K may be replaced by a directly-heated filament for use with accumulators. Gas fillings may be used to assist the concentration of the ray. The arrangement of the parts in the cylinder W is in accordance with the rules set out in Specication 392,781. Specification 391,360 also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also treating the cathode parts adjacent the oxide spot to suppress emission, as by spraying with chromium oxide, carbonizing, chromium plating, coating with tungsten or uranium oxide, or fitting insulating casings. Insulating diaphragms are also referred to. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
