Abstract
Artificial materials, such as artificial silk, fluff, hair, tow, films, pellicles, ribbons, transparent paper, obtained from cellulose xanthogenate solutions are desulphurized by treatment with a solution of an alkaline sulphite, or sulphurous acid containing a very small quantity of an ammonium base, or an alkali or alkaline-earth carbonate or bicarbonate sufficient to neutralize traces of acids from the coagulating baths which have not been completely removed. Shrinking of the materials during the desulphurizing treatment is avoided. When alkaline-earth bicarbonates are used the solution may contain an excess of carbon dioxide. In an example, the desulphurizing solution is made by dissolving 2 parts by weight of crystallized sodium sulphite, and 0.6 parts of sodium carbonate in 100 parts of water. The treatment may be carried out at ordinary or higher temperatures. It may be applied to filaments continuously with production, or to the material in the form of skeins, cakes, or bobbins.
