Abstract

399,886. Helicopters. PORTER, J. R., 6, Hurst Road, Twyford, and FULLALOVE, A. L., Market Place, Wantage, both in Berkshire. April 19, 1932, No. 11179. [Class 4.] The lifting screw of a helicopter is surrounded by a relatively large hollow ring of circular section and is so disposed that its plane of rotation lies between the median plane of the ring and the upper bounding plane thereof. As shown, a propeller A is surrounded by a ring C of circular cross section having an inner diameter approximately equal to that of the lifting screw and a cross-sectional diameter half of that of the screw. Ring C is connected to mounting of engine E driving airscrew A by means of hollow spokes G connecting with an annular exhaust manifold H. Ring C is of thin metal sheet witha hooped frame and is fitted with valves J for outlet of the exhaust gases. The body comprises portions D<1>, D<2> connected by a vertical pivot D<3> and is provided at its base with an inflated rubber buffer K surrounding a shock-absorbing strut L. A landing frame comprises hinged struts M interconnected by an elastic ligament N. Wheels may be pivoted to the ends of struts M. Steering may be effected by independently adjustable surfaces O controlled by ratchet hand levers P; alternatively a horizontal laterally adjustable hinged boom may be provided having a weight slidable thereon. In a modification the exhaust gases may be led directly from the engine cylinders to ring C, in which case the latter may be provided with cooling pockets receiving air from the screw. In a further modification, the ring may be of fabric and pockets be provided in it so as to inflate the ring by air discharged from the screw. Alternatively the ring C may be inflated with a gas lighter than air or be used as a fuel tank. Rotation of ring C under the influence of the airscrew torque reaction is stated to aid stability. The ring is also stated to give vertical lift due to the reduced pressure of the air on its upper surface caused by the inflow to the screws.
