Abstract
399,663. Searchlight reflectors. FERRERO, M., 3, Via Baldassare Peruzzi, and SALANI, E., 109, Corso Trieste, both in Rome. Nov. 15, 1932, No. 32333. [Class 75 (ii).] The reflecting surface of a searchlight is formed by bending a single metal foil or strip, or a plurality of foils or strips, against a suitably shaped support or supports, and means are provided to adjust the strip or strips on to the support or supports. In the form shown in the Figure, a cylindrical reflector of parabolic outline is formed by pressing a rectangular metal sheet 2 against a series of adjoining supports 1, the edges of the sheet 2 being held in the channels 3<1>, 3<11>. The channel 3<11> is adjustable by means of screws 4 secured to brackets 5 on the outer edge of each of the supports 1. The brackets 5 are elastic so as to allow movements of the sheet 1 due to thermal effects. To reduce such movements, the sheet and supports have approximately the same coefficient of thermal dilatation. The searchlight is mounted on a carriage mounted on wheels running in a circular path about a central vertical pivot. When the reflecting surface is a surface of revolution such as a paraboloid, it is formed by a number of strips of approximately triangular cross section, with their vertices abutting at the vertex of the paraboloid, and held in position at the other end in a manner similar to that described above.
