Abstract

517,777. Lampshades. PATTERSON, A. T. Aug. 2, 1938, No. 22802. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 1, 1939.] [Class 75 (ii)] A lampshade for electric lamps consists of an open topped main reflector comprising a plurality of radially-disposed light-reflecting flat surfaces 10 set at a common angle to the light source, a second reflector 17 provided with apertures 20 for the escape of hot air and positioned in or adjacent the main reflector, and means for securing the two reflectors together with passages allowing air to circulate between them. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 mirrored glass panels 10 are mounted in a frame consisting of upper and lower rings 12, 13 connected by radial bars 14 of channelled metal, and the upper ring is secured at, say three points, to the flared edge 18 of the internally plated reflector 17 by studs 19 of solder or other 'material so as to form aircirculating passages 20a. A lampholder 22 is secured in the top wall of the reflector 17. The upper surfaces of the panels 10 may be protected by a conical plate 15 secured to the ring 13. Heat-insulating material may be interposed between the reflectors. Fig. 3 shows another construction in which the panels 10 are secured with their edges abutting in rings 12, 13 and are hung from the lamp holder by a spider 23. The reflector, 17 is secured to a support 25 above the spider 23 by a clip 24. Fig. 4 shows a further construction in which a cast glass reflector formed with flat faces 10 and having a silvered back is formed with projections 19 resting on the flared edge 18 of a domed reflector 17, movement being prevented by brackets 26 secured in place by screws 27. The lampholder may be adjustably secured in a slot in the reflector 17 so that the direction of the reflected light may be varied. Fig. 8 shows a further construction in which the glass panels 10 are secured to flat surfaces on a metal hood 31 by flanges 32 and both the reflector 17 and the hood 31 are secured to a wire ring 34 by lugs 35, 33. In this construction the flat surfaces of the hood 31 may be formed as reflectors and. the panels 10 dispensed with. In another form the reflector 17 is formed with an inturned lower edge supporting the lower edges of the panels 10 while the upper edges of the panels are secured in a ring 12 at such an angle as to leave an air circulation space above them.
