Abstract
398,885. Bushes for bung &c. holes. OLDHAM, E., Trent Cooperage, Burtonon-Trent. March 24, 1932, No. 8720. [Class 21.] A metal bush 1 of the kind which is fixed in the bung tap or cork hole of a cask, barrel, drum or like wood &c. vessel by expanding it into the wall is constructed with a cylindrical outer and tapering inner wall and with grooves 5, 6 and a projection 8. By means of an expanding tool comprising a series of rollers arranged to give a surface of revolution having a taper such as the bush is to have when ready for use the rib 8 is first expanded so that the part below the groove 5 is pressed into the wall, after which the bush is expanded from the bottom upwards to give the shape shown in Fig. 4. The bush is held from rotation by projections which are knocked into the wood when the bush is first inserted. The flange 2 may be countersunk or may be curved to the shape of the stave. In other forms the grooves have any other shape and may be axial or inclined or of any other disposition. Instead of expanding the whole body of the sleeve, local portions only may be expanded. The projection 7 may have a channel on its outside in which a sealing ring is placed or other sealing means may be used. The flange 2 may have a corrugated ring 11 for piercing the material of the container.
