Abstract

Detergents are obtained by sulphonating mono alkyl ethers of glycerol, in which the alkyl group contains 16, 17 or 18 carbon atoms. Preferably the starting materials are those obtained by the saponification of the liver oils of elasmobranch fish. Besides having detergent properties, the products are stated to be dispersing and emulsifying agents which may be used in impregnating, tanning and in the manufacture of pigments, pastes, insecticides and fungicides. In examples: (1) batyl alcohol is sulphonated with pyridine-sulphurtrioxide in pyridine: (2) batyl alcohol is sulphonated with sodium pyrosulphate in pyridine: (3) the mixture of selachyl, batyl and chimyl alcohols obtained from the liver oil of Centrophosur Granulosus and Somniosis Microcephatus is similarly sulphonated. Cleansing baths for wool which foam readily are prepared according to further examples from the products by dissolving the latter in water. Specification 360,539 is referred to.ALSO:Emulsifying and dispersing agents, which may be used in tanning and impregnating processes and in the manufacture of insecticides and fungicides are obtained by sulphonating monoalkyl ethers of glycerol in which the alkyl group contains 16, 17 or 18 carbon atoms.
