Abstract

398,479. Glass manufacture. GASKELL, J., Stookswell, Hard Lane, St. Helens, Lancashire. March 12, 1932, No. 7424. [Class 56.] Relates to a roller for use in a flat sheet drawing-apparatus, particularly for drawing the sheet through the leer or tower, and of the kind in which discs of asbestos are threaded on a square or hexagonal shaft and are compressed between a fixed and a loose collar. According to the invention, the loose collar is operable by means situated at the extreme end of the roller shaft in order that the asbestos covering can be tightened while the apparatus is in use. The roller comprises a tubular shaft 1 secured to trunnions 2, 3, the trunnion 2 being formed with a flange 4 against which the asbestos rings 5 are compressed. A movable collar or abutment 8 slides on the shaft 1 and its outer end is engaged by a cotter 7 which passes through a slot 6 in the trunnion 3. A bolt 9 screws into an axial passage through the trunnion and transmits a thrust to the cotter 7 by means of a rod 10. Thus the asbestos rings 5 can be tightened by turning the bolt 9 during the operation of the machine, and the use of a square or hexagonal shaft 1 is unnecessary since the asbestos rings can be maintained under high pressure. In a modification, the cotter 7 is formed in the end of a rod which passes through the shaft 1 and through a hollow trunnion, and terminates in' a screwed portion provided with a nut which abuts against the outer end of the trunnion.
