Abstract

6578. McGinness, A. J. March 16. Rolling tubes; skewrolling; rolling - mandrels. -A skew-rolling mill for tubes has two pairs of skew - driven rolls, one pair of which are smaller in diameter, preferably about half, than the other. The pierced billet is placed in a trough 36 provided with a side extension 37, and is supported when on the mandrel 64 by a number of doubleconical rollers 41. The mandrel is supported at its end by a block 61 mounted in a swinging frame held by a catch lever 67, the frame being swung sideways on operating the lever and allowing the tube to be passed off. The mandrel is also supported near the head by jaws 45, 46, Fig. 8, mounted in a frame 43 and operated through levers from a pedal 56. The larger rolls 26, 27 and smaller rolls, of which one 24 is shown in Fig. 3, are cylindrical at the centre and conical at the ends, and are driven through universal shafts through toothed gearing from a common shaft.
