[Class 140.] In the making of ribbons consisting of threads held together by an adhesive, the selvedge threads and some or all of the other threads are surrounded by at least one auxiliary thread in the form of a flat helix. In the case where the auxiliary thread surrounds the selvedge threads and some only of the other threads, the threads not surrounded by the auxiliary thread are applied over the latter. The apparatus comprises a tubular member c carrying a rotating boss h having arms on which are mounted bobbins i supplying the auxiliary helically wound threads j. The threads e forming the ribbon are drawn from a creel, and pass under a guide l, through a tension device o, over a grooved roller m and thence in the form of a flat ribbon through the hollow centre of the member c. Emerging from the latter, the threads pass over a grooved roller f and a tongue member which supports them while the auxiliary thread is wound on. The thread assembly then passes between rollers q, q<1> and under a roller s which dips into a bath r containing adhesive. The ribbon passes round the rollers s, s<1> and between the roller s<1> and an upper roller s<2>, and thence to drying mechanism. Change speed gearing is provided so that the relation between the speed of the warp threads through the apparatus and the rotation of the member h can be adjusted.
