Abstract
Elastic fabrics composed of, or containing, rubber threads are, during the dyeing process, subjected to an elongation of about 15 per cent or more in the longitudinal direction and also, if desired, to a certain extent in the transverse direction, to decrease the cross-section of such threads and facilitate access of the dyeing liquid around them. The process may be carried out in a Jigger type of dyeing machine, <PICT:0451532/IV/1> with braking means k, l on the free-wheel rollers c, d powerful enough to produce the elongation required. Curved transverse stretcher bars f<1>, f<2> are provided, one on each side of the vat a, to stretch the fabric b transversely both before and after immersion in the dye vat. These stretcher bars may be carried at the opposite ends of frames pivoted on spindles f, and fabric-guiding rollers g<1>, g<2> are placed adjacent the stretcher bars f<1>, f<2>. The angular position of the frame is adjustable by micrometer screw control to regulate the amount of transverse stretch produced. In order to prevent periodical increases and decreases of elongation in the elastic fabric during the dyeing treatment, the two guide rollers g<1>, g<2> may be coupled together by a chain and toothed gearing. Alternatively, the braking action may be automatically rendered uniform as the material unwinds from one roll and winds on the other, by using a weight acting on a lever which is moved automatically thereon to adjust the brake in accordance with the variation in diameter of the work on the roller as the fabric is unwound. In a further form of apparatus, the rollers c, d are made of minimum diameter and the speed of the roller from which the fabric is being unwound is regulated by a brake controlled by p a governor geared to the roller to maintain the latter at a uniform speed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 21397/04, 4295/08, [both in Class 15], 150,750 and 229,824, [both in Class 15 (i)].
