397,820. Glass manufacture. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP HOLLANDSCHE MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR DE VERVAARDIGING VAN GLAS, 104, Weteringschans, Amsterdam.- (Assignees of Halbacb, H. L. ; Clarksburg, West Virginia, U.S.A.) June 21, 1933, No. 17681. Convention date, June 23, 1932. [Class 56.] Relates to apparatus for drawing sheet glass in which the sheet is drawn vertically upwards by pairs of rollers, as in the Fourcault type of apparatus. According to the invention, the end portions of the drawing rolls are made soft and yielding as compared with the middle portions in order that the rolls may grip the sheet along the whole of its width and not merely at the thickened or beaded edges. Each roll has its middle portion made up of discs 10, preferably of asbestos composition, threaded on a shaft 13 of polygonal section and clamped tightly together. The end portions of the roll comprise cylindrical sleeves 14 of asbestos fabric packed with yielding fibrous material 15, such as steel wool or asbestos wool. The ends of the sleeve are clamped between washers 17, 22 and the discs 10 and a fixed collar 23, respectively. A metal sleeve 18 which fits on, and is pinned to, the shaft 13 acts as an abutment for the washer 17 against which the discs 10 are tightened.
