Abstract
Ketenes are obtained by passing a material capable of producing a ketene by pyrolysis, such as an aliphatic ketone or a secondary alcohol, through a mass of molten material at a temperature between 600-900 DEG C. The molten material may comprise lead, aluminium, an <PICT:0396568/IV/1> alloy of aluminium, zinc and lead or a fused salt such as copper chloride, lead chloride, sodium borate, or mixtures thereof or any other liquid stable in the above temperature range which will not volatilize appreciably. According to the arrangement shown, the organic compound is passed through a heat-exchanger 3 and injected in the form of a spray into a body of molten material 6 in a reaction chamber 5. The chamber 5 is preferably lined with non-catalytic material such as fireclay, cement or asbestos, and the portion of the pipe 4 inside the reaction chamber is preferably lined inside and outside in a similar manner. The ketene produced passes out through pipe 23 and heat-exchanger 3. The molten material is maintained at the required temperature by circulation through a heating coil 12, either by means of a pump 9 or natural connection. Fresh molten material is introduced through pipe 14 either directly or via the heating coil 12. Any unreacted material is returned to the process after cooling. Suitable starting materials are acetone and isopropyl alcohol and acetic ketene, ethyl ketene and propyl ketene may be produced. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises carrying out pyrogenetic reactions in general in a process similar to that described above. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises carrying out pyrogenetic reactions by passing the raw material through a molten material enclosed in a reaction zone of enlarged cross section, and circulating the molten material through a narrow heating zone to supply the heat necessary for the reaction. According to the arrangement shown, the raw <PICT:0396568/III/1> material is passed through a heat-exchanger 3 and injected in the form of a spray into a body of molten material 6 in a reaction chamber 5. The chamber 5 is preferably lined with non-catalytic material such as fire-clay, cement or asbestos, and the portion of the pipe 4 inside the reaction chamber is preferably lined inside and outside in a similar manner. The product passes out through pipe 23 and heat-exchanger 3. The molten material is maintained at the required temperature by circulation through a heating coil 12, either by means of a pump 9 or natural convection. Fresh molten material is introduced through pipe 14 either directly or via the heating coil 12. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
