[Class 38 (ii).] In means for igniting oil and gas burners in which the sparking electrodes are connected through a step-up transformer and a mechanically driven make-and-break device to a direct current supply, means are provided for automatically maintaining the brushes and associated contacts of the make-and-break device in co-operating relationship when the circuit is closed and for moving them out of co-operating relation with one another when the circuit is opened. As shown, a commutator is provided comprising a non-rotatable part G and a rotatable part H, preferably carried direct upon the burner motor shaft. The part G carries diametrically opposite pairs of spring steel strip brushes K, one pair being connected to the supply, and the other pair to the transformer and preferably shunted by a condenser. Corresponding contact pads L interconnected in pairs are inserted in the part H, the trailing edge of each pad being cut away to reduce arcing. The part G is connected by a shaft P to the movable core F of an electromagnet E, connected to the supply, so that, on closing the circuit, the part G is moved by the core to bring the brushes K into contact with the contacts L. On opening the circuit, the part G is returned by a spring S.
