Abstract

395,138. Diaphragms. WALTERS, F., (trading as NUVOLION ELECTRICS), and MELLAS, J. W., 56, Derington Road, Tooting, London. May 30, 1932, No. 15311. [Class 40 (iv).] A seamless conical diaphragm 1 and integral cylindrical extension 2 for the coil 5 of a moving- coil loud-speaker is formed by pressing a mass of paper pulp &c. or a sheet of fabric softened by treatment with h steam between appropriately shaped moulds, the diaphragm after drying being impregnated to render it non-hygroscopic whilst the extension 2 is treated with a shellac varnish. The coil 5 is also coated with shellac varnish after it has been wound on the extension. The diaphragm is preferably formed with a corrugated flange 4 and the moulds employed are preferably shaped so as to produce portions 3 of slightly increased thickness at the central part of the cone and at the point where the latter meets the extension 2. If desired, the coil 5 may be accommodated in an annular indentation formed in the outer surface of the extension.
