Abstract
A process of converting raw clays into bleaching-clays suitable for the treatment of mineral and vegetable oils, fats, and waxes, by bringing the raw clay into the state of a paste and subsequently boiling for many hours with a converting agent, is characterized in that, in addition to the free acids hitherto used, respective water-soluble salts of these acids are also used. For the production of clay of the same bleaching power, less acid is used than hitherto. The salts used may be contained in the solution produced in a prior conversion process and diluted if necessary. In this case, the solution is employed, together with additional salts if required, for producing the clay mud. Sodium, potassium, ferric, aluminium or alkaline earth chlorides or mixtures thereof are specified for use in conjunction with hydrochloric acid. With sulphuric acid, the corresponding sulphates are employed. In examples, clay is made into a mud with 10 DEG B<\>ae aluminium chloride or with 10 DEG B<\>ae waste liquor from a previous hydrochloric acid lixiviating process, and boiled for 10 hours with 18 DEG B<\>ae hydrochloric acid.
