Abstract

392,927. Engine stop-gear. WARREN, F. and WARREN, S. F., 27, Lowick Road, Harrow, Middlesex. Nov. 19, 1931, Nos. 32130/31 and 1911/32. [Class 122 (iv).] Relates to controlling devices for starting the operation of fire-extinguishers, particularly on vehicles; the devices may be released by temperature or crashsensitive means. A valve-opening cable 5 is fixed to a spindle 3 which is adapted to slide within a casing 1 under action of a heavy spring 6, but normally is held inoperative by a detent lever 15 engaging a collar 7 on the spindle. The detent is held from turning about its pivot 14 by a collar 12 which is fixed on a spindle 4 and has a tapered end 13. The spindle is urged in a direction to release the detent 15 by a light spring 10, but is detained by a fusible or combustible link 18, which extends between a fixed hook 17 and an arm 20 fixed on the spindle 4. The link 18 is protected from injury by the lower framing 16 of the casing 1 and by a bar 21. The surface of the collar 12 may be slightly conical to reduce friction between it and the detent 15. The link 18 may be under compression, instead of tension. The device would be arranged with the link 18 above a danger point. Alternatively, it may be arranged near the extinguisher, and the link, in the form of a thread be led past a number of danger points. The detent lever may comprise a fork engaging a collar on the spindle 4. In a modification, suitable for operation by a crash, the end of the spindle 4, Fig. 3, engages in a slight recess 30 in an inertia member 31. This is supported on a flat surface 32 by ball bearings 34. In the event of a crash, the member 31 moves out of the path of the spindle 4, thus releasing the detent 15. Movement of the main spindle 3 may be arranged also to turn off the petrol supply and/or the ignition of a vehicle in which the apparatus is fixed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 302,591, [Class 47 (ii), Fireextinguishing &c.].
