Abstract

Plaster of Paris is obtained by preheating crushed gypsum, preferably in a zone maintained below 200 DEG F., and then passing the heated mass through a zone maintained at a temperature substantially higher than the calcining temperature, viz. above 350 DEG F. and preferably at about 650 DEG F. In an apparatus for effecting this process, crushed gypsum is fed from hopper 2 into preheating zone 1, <PICT:0392780/III/1> which is given a successive slow forward and quick backward movement by rotating cam 4 and spring 5. The zone is heated by electrical means 6. The material passes in a shallow layer to the calcining zone 9 heated by electrical means 6<1>, 15, and travels therethrough by the agency of cam 4<1> and spring 5<1>. The temperature of this zone and the rate of passage of the material therethrough are so correlated that over-calcination is avoided, and all of the gypsum is reduced to the hemihydrate stage, the finished material being discharged into a closed cooling pit 11. The various parts of the apparatus are connected by flexible couplings 7, 8, 12. A steam-outlet valve 13 is provided in chamber 9.
