Abstract

Ketones are obtained by the dehydrogenation of the corresponding secondary alcohols with the aid of a brass catalyst, the reaction being carried out at temperatures between 350 DEG and 480 DEG C. in the substantial absence of air or oxygen. The alcohols may be pure or admixed with other components. Methyl ethyl ketone is obtained by the dehydrogenation of secondary butyl alcohol at temperatures between 370-460 DEG C., especially 440-460 DEG C., and moist isopropyl alcohol is converted into acetone at 456 DEG C. Isopropyl alcohol or secondary amyl alcohol can also be treated at temperatures between 370 DEG and 460 DEG C. Specification 173,539, [Class 1 (i), Chemical processes &c.], is referred to.
