Abstract

A polished coating is obtained on surfaces such as those of advertising tablets, show cards, metal, furniture, fabrics, &c. by applying at least two superposed coatings and submitting the coated surface to pressure against a polished surface. The coatings may be formed by applying solutions of shellac, natural or synthetic resins, celluloid or cellulose derivatives, or by applying films which may be softened by treatment with a solvent. Porous or permeable surfaces may be coated first with glue or size. The coated surface is pressed against a polished hard surface such as a sheet of glass or is passed between heated rotating rollers one of which is polished, or may be pressed against a polished mould which may be heated. The surface of the first coating may be decorated or printed upon before applying the second coating.
