[Class 140.] Lacquer-like coatings on flexible materials are produced by applying, by means of heat and pressure, thin foils of thermoplastic material having a thickness of 0.01 to 0À05 mm. The flexible base may be paper, cardboard, fabrics such as thin calico, leather, wood veneer, cork, metal foil, celluloid, synthetic resins such as polystyrol and the material known under the registered Trade Mark " Galalith," or artificial cork made from disintegrated cork and nitrocellulose. Suitable thermoplastic materials comprise cellulose derivatives such as cellulose nitrate, acetate, formate, propionate or butyrate and ethyl, methyl or benzyl cellulose, which may contain plasticizers and synthetic resins, and synthetic resins such as polymerized vinyl compounds. The foils may be coloured and may be made by coating or impregnating a base such as thin fabric, e.g. silk, paper, parchment paper or regenerated cellulose. A plurality of foils having different compositions and consequently different degrees of softness may be superposed and pressed in one operation. Pressing may be effected by plates or rolls which may be provided with designs in relief or intaglio. Pressures of from 15 to 40 atmospheres and temperatures of from 60‹ C. to 120‹ C. are used. The process may be applied to the production of washable paper in the form of placards, posters, pictures, maps, wallpaper or marbled paper, book covers, cartons, playing cards and sound records. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of adhesives. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
