[Class 94 (i).] A matrix for a wrapping-machine comprises a ring of brushes forming a hollow truncated cone, the brushes being mounted on levers so that they can be forced apart by an article being wrapped, the levers having projections which engage suitable recesses in adjacent levers and which also carry bristles so that the periphery of the funnel-shaped surface is unbroken as the levers are parted, the machine being thus capable of wrapping articles of varying size and shape without adjustment. The article to be wrapped is carried through the brushes by a plunger and the brushes can be arranged to open out during the return movement of the plunger. Fig. 1 shows a sectional elevation and Fig. 2 a plan view of the matrix. The brushes 5 are mounted on levers 3 which are held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by springs 7. The levers 3 are provided with projections 3<1> which fit into suitable recesses in the adjacent levers, the projections 3<1> also carrying bristles. The article to be wrapped, for example, the chocolate cream 12, is placed above the plunger 13, is covered by the wrapping material 11, for example, tin or aluminium foil, and is held in position by the member 18. The plunger is then raised, forcing the article 12 through the ring of brushes which swing apart against the action of the springs 7, and press the foil against the top and sides of the article 12. The brushes 5 may be forced apart by levers 10 acting on ring 9, whilst the plunger 13 is being retracted, to prevent damage to the bristles. The levers 3 could also be adjusted individually by members 10 to produce a cross-sectional form of the matrix suitable for the article being wrapped.
