E., Beauchamp House, Kenilworth, Warwickshire. Dec. 15, 1931, No. 34695. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv).] A motor vehicle of the type in which the engine and transmission mechanism are located behind the axis of the rear wheels is provided with a compound system of springing, comprising any usual arrangement of springs to support the chassis or body upon the non- rotating parts of the rear axle, in combination with one or more springs also attached to the non-rotating parts of the rear axle and adapted to support a sub-frame pivoted to the chassis and arranged to carry the engine and transmission mechanism and permit relative movement in a vertical plane between the inner ends of the articulated shafts driving the rear road wheels and the non-rotating parts of the rear axle. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the chassis is supported on the non-rotating parts 1 of the rear axles 2 by transverse quarterelliptic springs 3 secured to a transverse member 4 fixed between upwardly-bent parts of the side members 5 of the chassis. The engine 11 and transmission 12 are mounted on a sub-frame 9 pivoted at 10 to the members 5 and supported by one or more leaf springs 8 from the non-rotating parts 1 of the rear axles 2, which are driven through articulated shafts 13. In a modification, the sub-frame 9 is supported by a transverse spring such as 8, but the rear part of the chassis is supported by longitudinal quarter-elliptic springs hinged &c. to the non- rotating parts of the rear axles.
