Abstract

464,826. Motor vehicles. HARE, T. G. Oct. 23, 1935, No. 29278. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXII] A motor-vehicle chassis comprises a main frame spring mounted on a front axle and rear wheels and a sub-frame supported from the rear wheels and rockably connected to an inter. mediate part of the main frame, the power unit being mounted on the sub-frame with a spring support at its rear end and driving the rear wheels through articulated half axles. The main frame 2, comprising longitudinals 3 connected by cross members 4, 5, is spring supported in any desired manner on the front axle. Below the rear end thereof, a sub-frame 7, comprising diverging side members 8 and cross members 9, 10, carries hollow journals on which the rear wheels rotate. At the front end, the cross member 9 is connected by a ball-andsocket joint 12 to a crosshead 14, Fig. 5, secured to a pair of vertical rods 15 slidable in a bracket 16 attached to the main frame cross member 4, springs 17, 18 providing a resilient support and the crosshead being in addition connected by a telescopic rod 20 to a damping device 19. At the rear end, the side members 8 carry two pairs of spring hangers 22, 23 to which are pivoted shackles carrying transverse leaf springs 25, 26, the spring 25 being centrally secured to the rear cross member 5 of the main frame. Each of the springs is longer than the distance between the hangers so that, if forced outwards when cornering the inner end of each spring is lowered and the outer end raised as indicated in Fig. 7. The power unit 29 is supported at its front end by a universal joint connection 28 to an upstanding bracket 27 on the subframe and at the rear end by a lug 33 on the differential housing 32 connected to the centre of the spring 26, the drive being transmitted to the rear wheels through articulated half-axles 34. The radiator 36 is mounted on the subframe with a flexible hose connection 37 to the engine.
