Abstract
501,083. Motor vehicles. HARE. T. G. Nov. 12, 1937, No. 31117. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] A motor vehicle comprising a power unit, consisting of an engine, transmission gear and differential, pivotally connected at the engine end to a vehicle frame supported by springs from non-rotating driving-wheel journals or bearing housings. with the differential end of the power unit spring-supported from said housings, is characterized in that the engine end is spring-supported upon a. part which is suspended from the vehicle frame by a universal joint and that means are provided for holding the power unit against rocking movement about its longitudinal axis. As shown, the main frame 1 is supported on rear driving wheels 7 by springs 5 attached to bearing housings 6 connected by a dead axle 8. A U-shaped sub-frame 11 is suspended from a transverse part 3 of the frame 1 by a univer. sal joint 10, its arms being secured to the housings 6. The power unit, comprising the engine 15, radiator 21, gearbox 16 and differential 17 is supported at the engine end by springs 13 on a transverse member 12 of the subframe and at the differential end by a transverse spring 9 carried by the dead axle . or wheel housings, the drive being transmitted to the wheels through articulated half-axles.. To restrain transverse oscillation of the power unit, a transverse torsion shaft 22 with rigid crank arms 23 is mounted between the engine and radiator, the ends of the crank arms being connected through shock absorbers 24 to brackets 25 on the sub-frame. A modification is described in which the subframe 11 is dispensed with, the engine being, instead, provided with a bracket or extension suspended from the universal joint 10 through a connection including a compression spring. The shock absorbers to which the arms of the torsion shaft 22 are connected are, in this case, carried by the main frame. Specification 464,826 is referred to.
