Abstract
Compositions for cleaning and polishing metals comprise a soluble fluoride and the usual ingredients other than alkali hydroxide. Ammonium and alkali metal fluorides are specified. The compositions may be liquid, e.g. aqueous or alcoholic, pasty with a basis of fats, waxes, or solid hydrocarbons, or solid, e.g. with a basis of kieselguhr, talc, Vienna chalk, or other cleaning powder. In examples: (1) 50 gm. of kieselguhr, 20 gm. of talc, 10 gm. of ammonium fluoride, 40 gm. of alcohol, and 10 gm. of ammonium oleate are mixed with 150-200 gm. of water. (2) 5 gm. of ceresine, 2 gm. of tallow, 30 gm. of ammonium oleate, 10 gms. of "Vaseline" oil, and 2 gm. of ammonium fluoride are melted together on the water-bath, and mixed with 53 gm. of kieselguhr. The prior use of hydrofluoric acid or compositions containing it for cleaning metals, and of soluble fluorides in cleansing and disinfecting compositions is referred to.
