[Class 106 (iii).] Depending on the speed of a train or vehicle an indicating relay is or is not energized by the instantaneous charge on a condenser at some instant after the train or vehicle has initiated a charging or discharging. For instance, a train closes contact A, Fig. 3, to charge a condenser C fully and then opens that contact whereby the condenser slowly discharges through a resistance R<1> ; after an interval, depending on the speed of the train, the train closes a spaced contact B whereby the condenser discharges through a set of relays R<11>, R<12>, R<13> adjusted to respond to different condenser potentials so that an indication of the speed is given by the number of relays which respond. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement in which only one contact is used. The train maintains the contact A for a certain time in the dotted position whereby the condenser C is slowly charged through the resistance R<4> ; when the contact is freed it returns to the full-line position and the condenser discharges through the relay S. The condenser and relay apparatus may be fitted on the locomotive, two contacts on the locomotive being successively actuated by a single track abutment, or two track abutments successively actuating a single locomotive contact.
