Abstract

696,543. Counting-apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, , Ltd. June 11, 1948, No. 15812/48. Class 106 (i). [Also in Groups XXX and XL (c)] A pulse counting circuit comprises a train of gas discharge tubes which discharge in sequence in response to applied pulses, the firing of a given tube extinguishing the discharge in a preceding tube and means whereby a discharge can be caused to travel along the train of tubes in either direction. Fig. 1 shows a pulse counting circuit in which if tube 1a is initially discharging tube 2a is primed via circuit 11 so that the next pulse applied at lead 5 fires tube 2a and thus primes tube 3a. Subsequent pulses on lead 5 cause the a tubes to fire in a clockwise sequence. When, however, tube 1a is discharging tube 3b is also primed so that a pulse applied to lead 7 causes this tube to fire and subsequent pulses cause the b tubes to fire in anticlockwise sequence. The firing of any given tube causes a voltage drop in the common anode load resistor 10 and thus extinguishes the preceding tube in the chain. Thus, by inspection the difference between the number of pulses applied to leads 5 and 7 can be determined and the equality of these numbers which is evidenced by the home position tube 1a firing can be indicated. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), four electrode cold cathode tubes are used, thus combining each pair of the associated 1a and b tubes in a single envelope. The handling capacity of the system may be increased by connecting a number of counting rings in parallel so that they are simultaneously actuated by the two pulse trains, Fig. 3 (not shown). The circuit may be used as an axle counter in a railway signalling system a pulse is then applied to one lead each time an axle enters a signalling section and a pulse is applied to the other lead each time an axle leaves a section (see Group XXX). Specifications 567,863, 613,137, [Group XL (b)], 691,901 and 696,642, [Group XXX], are referred to.
