[Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii).] In hectograph-copying machines of the type comprising an impression roller 32 mounted in a carriage 15 movable over a flat bed 12 adapted to receive a gelatine or like printing-surface, such as a gelatine band 13, a margin bar 42 is provided, which is automatically retracted from operative position when the impression roller is pressed downward, and which is adjustable to determine the extent to which a sheet may be inserted and the amount, therefore, of margin provided. The roller 32 is carried by a bracket 30 rigid with a handle 27 and coacts with the usual pressure roller 38. The bar 42 is of right-angled cross section having a narrow flat surface 44 connecting the sides, so that either thin sheets or heavy cards may be supported. The bar 42 is suspended by arms one of which is fixed to a pivot shaft 45 while the other can pivot freely about a stationary shaft, and an arm 68 fixed to the shaft 45 houses an eccentric 61 carrying a pin 60 on an arm 58 connected to a rod 54 secured to a member 53 carrying a stud 52 engaging a slot 51 in a plate 50 on the bracket 30. When the handle 27 is pushed forward to bring the roller 32 down on to the bed 12, the bar 42 is raised out of its path, and when the roller is raised after printing, the bar is returned to normal position. The eccentric 61 is rotatable by means of a handle 63 to vary the initial position of the bar 42, accidental turning of the handle being prevented by a spring 65. A cable for rotating the roller 32 is connected to an arm adapted to pivot about the lateral axis of the carriage 15.
