  • Thi invention relates to duplicating apparatus and particularly to duplicating machines of the liquid process type in which a master sheet bearing subject matter written or otherwise produced in reverse by the use of copy ink is carried around by a drum so as to be brought into impression relationship with copy sheets'one at a time, each of such copy sheets being provided in turn with a film of solvent on its face so as to be brought into engagement with the ink of the master sheet for producing a positive copy of the subject matter on the copy sheet. It is the object of this invention to provide in a machine of this type a new and improved form and arrangement of parts by which improved results may be attained by the use of a simple construction which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and as- ;semble.

Claims.
Thi invention relates to duplicating apparatus and particularly to duplicating machines of the liquid process type in which a master sheet bearing subject matter written or otherwise produced in reverse by the use of copy ink is carried around by a drum so as to be brought into impression relationship with copy sheets'one at a time, each of such copy sheets being provided in turn with a film of solvent on its face so as to be brought into engagement with the ink of the master sheet for producing a positive copy of the subject matter on the copy sheet. It is the object of this invention to provide in a machine of this type a new and improved form and arrangement of parts by which improved results may be attained by the use of a simple construction which is easy and inexpensive to manufacture and as- ;semble.
This application discloses a new and improved form of moistening means for the application of a film of solvent to one of a pair of forwarding rollers for transfer of the film to the face of a copy sheet moved forwardly by the rollers into the grip of the drum and its cooperating impression roller forming a part of the machine, but such improved moistening means is not claimed herein, since the same is disclosed and claimed by a co-pending application Serial No. 323,165, filed March 9, 1940.
In the arrangement illustrated herein, an improved form of feeding and forwarding means for the copy sheets is shown, adapted todeliver copy sheets one at a time to the grip of the drum and the impression roller cooperating therewith, and comprising an intermittently driven feed roller which carries the top one of a pile of sheets into the bite of a pair of intermittently driven forwarding rollers which, in turn. carry the sheet forwardly into the bite of the drum and impression roller. In this construction, the power is applied to the feed roller and to the forwarding rollers for driving them intermittently by means of clutch devices which drive in one direction only for forwarding a copy sheet and which yield for permitting the copy sheet tov be drawn forwardly by the drum independently of the normal driving means when the copy sheet is brought into operative engagement with the drum. In the preferred construction, the means for actuating the feed roller and the forwarding rollers comprises an operating arm which is swingingly mounted in position and which is given an op erative stroke in one direction for rotating the feed roller in the desired timed relation to the rotation of the drum for feeding a copy sheet forwardly from the pile of sheets into the bite of the forwarding rollers, and which is given a quick motion operative strokein the opposite direction for rotating the forwarding rollers in the direction for advancing the copy;sheet from the feed roller into the bite of the drum and c0- operating impression roller. In the arrangement shown, the operating arm is actuated for driving the feed roller by means of a cam and is actuated in the opposite direction for driving the forwarding rollers by means of a coiled spring which acts under the control of said cam.
For providing the desired adjustment and control of the size of the margin at the top of the copy sheet above the printed matter thereon, means is included for adjusting the position of .the actuating cam with respect to the driving means therefor, which is actuated in timed relation to the rotation of the drum. By adjusting the position of the earn, it is made to act at any desired point in the revolution of the drum so as to control the position of the copy sheet with respect to the master sheet. Indicating means is also provided for showing the position of the cam so as to expedite the adjustment of the parts to the desired position.
Improved means is provided for mounting the drum rotatably in position in the framework, comprising radially disposed channel portions in the side frame members of the machine arranged to receive bearing members carried by the drum on its end faces, with removable pins or screws securing the drum in position, the arrangement being such that the drum can be very quickly and easily mounted in its operative position or removed from operative position.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide an improved arrangement of supporting means for a pile of copy sheets to be fed into the machine, together with an improved arrangement of adjustable margin bars and adjustable side pressure parts for controlling the withdrawal of the copy sheets one at a time for delivery to the drum.
The improved machine comprises further a the end of the master sheet. Means is provided for opening the gripping mechanism, comprising a trip member pivotally mounted on the frame adapted to be moved manually into position for engagement with an arm carried by the drum and movable with the spring pressed fingers by which the flexible bar is pressed into holding engagement with the master sheet, the arrangement being such that upon operative engagement of 1 said arm with said trip member under pressure conditions the fingers are actuated against the pressure of the associated spring means forrelieving the pressure of the flexible bar against the end of the master sheet.
'It-is another object of this invention to improve mechanisms of this type in sundry details hereinafter pointed out. The preferred means by which the several objects have been attained are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of the improved machine as seen from the right in Fig. 2 but with the side closure plate and the crank handle removed;

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, in which corresponding parts are indi cated by the same reference characters, 26 and 26 indicate side plates comprising the major members of the framework of the machine, each of said side plates being provided with an outwardly directed flange 21 thereabout, as is best shown in Fig. 1. The side plates'25 and 26 are rigidly connected together by means of cross bars 28 and 29 (see Fig. 3) and by a transversely extending frame plate in the form of an angle comprising a vertically disposed portion 30' and a horizontally disposed portion 3|, as is shown in said Fig. 3. Each of the side plates 26 and 26 is provided with a radially extending channel portion 32 comprising connecting flanges 33 and 34, as is best shown in Fig. 9, each of said channels opening inwardly, as is best indicated in Fig. 6. Between the side plates and 26, a

drum 35 is mounted, such drum in the arrangement shown comprising end plates 36 and a cylindrical wall portion 31. The cylindrical wall portion 31 is in the form of a casting, (see Fig. 3) having strengthening ribs 38 thereon. The drum at opposite ends is provided with bearing members 39 which are slidable along the channels 32 of the side plates when the drum is moved into position in the framework. The bearing 33 at the near side of the machine as shown in Fig. 2 is provided with a pinion 46 for applying power to the drum for rotating it as hereinafter described. The drum is mounted in position between the side plates 25 and 26 by means of pins or screws 4|. As'is best shown in Fig. 5, a second pinion 42 rotatably mounted upon the framework inposition to mesh with the pinion 40 is described. The pinion 42 is in position at one side of the path of the pinion 40 into and out of its operative position so as to provide clearance for the movement of the pinion 40 along the channels 32. By the provision of this arrangement, the drum can be very quickly and easily moved into and out of operative position in the framework.
In the form of machine as illustrated, end closure plates 43 and 44 are securedin position substantially coextensive with the side plates 26 and 26 respectively, as is best shown in Fig. 2.
At one side of the drum, it is provided with an outwardly open groove 45 cut in the cylindrical wall portion 31 adjacent to one of the strengthening ribs 38, as is best shown in Fig. 1'7. Within this groove, a bar 46 is loosely mounted, being held in position by longitudinally extending lugs 41 carried by the end plates 36 of the drum, as is clearly shown in Fig. 18,
the lugs 41 being in engagement with notches 46 in the ends of the bar. In the arrangement shown, the bar 46 is in the form of a light thin flexible strip of metal, being of such width as to cause its outer edge to be substantially fiush with the cylindrical face of the drum. The arrangement is such that the bar 46 is adapted to be pressed into holding engagement with the end of'a master sheet 49 inserted in the groove so. as to hold the master sheet strongly in position on the drum. V
The meansemployed for pressing the bar 46 against the face of the groove 45 comprises a rock shaft 60 rotatably mounted between the end plates 36 of the drum adjacent to the groove,
inwardly from the shaft, such arm 53 being normally pulled toward the left in Fig. 16 by means of a coiled spring 54 so. as normally to cause the fingers to press the bar 46 into gripping v relationship to the face of the groove 45., As is best shown in Figs. 15 and 16, the inner end of the arm 53 is turned at right angles to provide a longitudinally extending lug 55 for purposes hereinafter brought out.
A platen roller 56 is mounted below the drum 85 by means of a shaft 51 which is rotatably mounted in supporting plates 58 pivotally mounted by means of machine screws 59 on the outer faces of the side plates 25 and 28 respectively of the machine. At their forward ends the plates 58 are provided with 'set .screws 60 which bear upon cams 6| rotatably mounted in position by means of a shaft 62 which extends outwardly beyond the end closure plate 44, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, being provided with a head 63 on its outer end for ready manipulation of the shaft. The arrangement is such that byrotary movement of the shaft 62 and the cams 6| the supporting plates 58 can be swung about the pivot pins 59 for controlling the.de-
gree of pressure of the platen or impression roller 56 against the face of the drum 35. 1
At the rear end of the machine, a table 64 is mounted in position for'supporting a pile of copy sheets 55 for delivery one at a time to the drum 35. The table in the arrangement shown is in the form of a sheet of metal having a downwardly turned flange G6 at its front end and flanges E! at its side edges for providing the required strength. The table is pivotally mounted at its outer edge portion by means of machine screws 68 passing through the flanges 81 and through rearwardly extending arms 69 carried by the frame of the machine, as is clearly. shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Above the front edge of the table 54, a feed roller is provided rotatably mounted'in position by means of a shaft H as hereinafter described. Coiled springs 12 are connected at their front ends with the frame bar 28 and at their rear ends with arms I3 extending downwardly from the table adjacent to the axis of the table. such springs serving normally to hold the table swung to the limit of its motion in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 3 with the top sheet of the pile of sheets 65 pressing upwardly against the feed roller 10. The frame bar 69 at one side of the machine is pro-'-, vided with a pivotally mounted latch member '14 adapted by engagement with a pin carried by the table to hold the table in lowered position for ready insertion of a pile of sheets in adjusted position upon the table 64.
Means is provided in connection with the table 54 for controlling the position of a p le of sheets on the table, such means comprising margin bars 16 at opposite sides of the table, each in the form of an angle, as is best indicated in Fig. 2.
These margin bars are held adjustabl'y in position with respect to the table 64 by means of At the near the margin bars. At their inner edges, the bars .16 are provided with downwardly turned lugs 88 which engage the slots 18 for assisting in holding the margin bars in operative position on the table.
Each of the margin bars 15 is provided with a pressure pad adapted to engage the adjacent side face of a pile of sheets mounted on the table. In the construction illustrated, such pressure pads are'in the form of blocks 8! of i sponge rubber carried on the inner faces of .springbrackets 82 mounted on the outer faces of the bars I5, the arrangement being such that the blocks 8! are normally spaced. outwardly with respect to the inner faces of the upwardly extending portions of the margin bars. In the preferred construction, the cells of the rubber at the inner faces of the pressure pads are open. Means is provided for pressing the pads 8! inwardly against the spring action of the brackets 82 so as to engage the side faces of a pile of sheets on the table, such means comprising screws 83 carried by the margin bars with thumb nuts 84 thereon, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2, arranged for forcing the pads inwardly through openings in the vertical portions of the bars IS.
The feed roller I0 and its shaft H are preferaby arranged so as to be readily removable from the machine. For making this result possible, special types of supporting members for the ends of the shaft H are provided (see Fig. 10). At one end, a socket member 85 is slidably mounted within ahousing member 89, with a coiled spring 81 engaging the outer end of the socket memher for holding it normally pressed inwardly. At the opposite end of the shaft II, a short shaft 88 is provided mounted in bearings 89 carried by the framework, such shaft extending inwardly beyond the inner face of the side plate 26 and h ving a pin 90 inserted therethrough. The end of the shaft H is bored out so as to have telescopic engagement with the end of the shaft 88, t e end of the shaft 1| being notched for operative en agement with the pin 90. Normally the shaft 1| is held in position as shown in Fig. 10 by reason of the pressure of the shaft ll toward the right by the spring 81. Whenever it is desirrd to remove the feed roller 10, the shaft 1| is r adily moved toward the left in Fig. 10 against the action of the spring 81 for clearing s eh shaft "H from the shaft 88 and pin 90.

Means is provided for applying a film of solvent tothe upper forwarding rolier9l for'application to each of the copy .sheets inturn as they are moved forwardly by said forwarding rollers. This means comprises a roller 99 rotatably mounted by means of a shaft I00 in the lower ends of' arms I 0| pivotally mounted by means of machine screws I02 so as to permit the roller 99 to be moved toward and from the forwarding roller 9|. Coiled springs I03 serve normally to press the roller 99 yieldingly againstthe roller 9|, as is best shown in Fig. '7.
The means for applying solvent to the roller 9| comprises further a pipe I04 extending across above the rollers 9| and 99 (see Figs. 2 and 4), such pipe being provided with openings I05 in. its
lower wall portion at intervals across the ma-' chine. The pipe I04 is connected by means of a tube I06 with a pump I0I which takes solvent from a receptacle I08 (see Fig. 3) for delivery into the bight of the rollers 9| and 99. In the arrangement shown, a check valve I09 is pro-' vided between the pump and the pipe I04. The pump I0! is operated by means of a lever |IIO pivotally mounted upon the side plate 25 of the machine so as to be actuated by a second lever III pivotally mounted-upon the same axis, the lever |I| being provided with a lug I|2 engaging the lower face of the lever IIO, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The lever III is given a swinging movement about its pivotal axis by means: of a roller 3 rotatably mounted on the lever in position to engage a cam II4 carriedby the drum 35. The lever III is normally pressed upwardly by a coiled spring I I5 interposed between the lever and a lug IIS carried by the side plate 25- The construction is such that the pump I01 is given an operative stroke upon each complete revolution of the drum 35 so as to provide a supply of solvent between the forwarding roller 9| and the cooperating roller 99, as shown in Fig. 4.
In the preferred arrangement, the rollers 59 and 99 are formed of rubber which is somewhat yielding under pressure; the forwarding roller 9| is also made of rubber but somewhat harder and less yielding; the roller 92 is made of sponge rubber with the pores closed at the face of the roller.
For driving the feed roller I0 through the shaft II and the connected short shaft 88 intermittently in the direction for forwarding a sheet from the pile 65 to the forwarding rollers 9| and 92, and for driving the forwarding rollers 9| and 92 in the direction for continuing the forward movement of the sheet from the forwarding rollers into the bite of the drum 35 and its cooperating platen roller 56, an operating arm I" is pivotally mounted upon the framework at the near side of the machine so as to drive the parts in the desired timed relation to each other. This operating arm III is pivotally mounted in position by means of a pin II8 (see Fig. 5) which extends into an opening in a heavy supporting pate member H9 removably secured in position on the outer face of the arm I" by means of screws I20, such screws being mounted in lugs |2| and I22 extending outwardly from the outer face of the side plate 26, as is best shown in Fig. 5. A spring I23 serves normally to hold the arm II! at the lowermost limit of its swinging motion, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. For operating the rollers I0 and 9|, the arm I II is provided with a set of teeth I24 meshing with a pinion I25 loosely mounted upon the 'short shaft 88, and a set of teeth. I26 meshing with a pinion I21 loosely mounted upon the shaft 93 of the roller 9| The pinion I25 is connected with the shaft 88 by means of a one-way clutch mechanism I28 which is adapted to apply power from the pinion in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 7 for driving the feedroller I0 in the direction for moving the top sheet of the pile of sheets toward the right in Fig. 3, the connections being such that upon an operative stroke of said arm the top sheet is carried into the bite of the rollers 9| and 92 from its normal position as shown in Fig. 3. The clutch mechanism in the arrangement shown comprises a cylindrical part I29 connected with the pinion serving through rollers I30 to drive a head portion I3I' which is rigidly connected with the shaft 88; The pinion I2I is connected with the shaft 93 of the roller 9| by a similar one-way driving clutch I32, comprising a cylindrical member I33 connected with the pinion serving through rollers I34 to drive a head I35 connected with said shaft 93.
The arrangement is such that upon a stroke 0 the arm I I! in clockwise direction in Fig. 5 the pinion I25 is rotated for driving the feed roller 10 in the direction for feeding a sheet from the pile; upon a return stroke of the operating lever II I in counterclockwise direction in Fig. 5, the pinion I 21 is driven for causing rotary movement of the forwarding roller 9| for continuing the movement of the sheet presented thereto by the feed roller I0. Since the roller 92 is pressed continuously toward the roller 9|, such roller 92 is caused to rotate at the same surface speed as that of the driven roller 9|. The arrangement is such that upon the downward swinging movement of the arm II! the copy sheet is moved forwardly into the bite of the drum 35 and the cooperating impression roller 56 so as to be thereafter pulled forward by the drum.
The means for actuating the operating arm III in timed relation to the rotation of the drum 35 comprises alpinion I39 which is rotatably mounted on the outer face of the side plate 26 of the machine by means of a short trunnion I31 which operates in an anti-friction bearing I38, as is clearly shown in Fig. -12. outer face, the pinion I36 is provided with a pin I39 in concentric position thereon, which supports a sleeve I40 having a plate |4I formed thereon adjacent to the pinion, with a cam I42 on the outer face of the plate. In the arrangement shown, the sleeve I40, plate I 4| and cam I42 are formed integrally with each other. The sleeve I40 is provided on its outer end with a dial I43 (see Fig. 8). Upon the outer end portion of the pin I39, a pointer member I44 is mounted so as to rotate with the pin. On the extreme end portion of the pin I39, a nut I45 is provided, the arrangement being such that the sleeve I40 and the cam I 42 can be secured in any desired rotated position with respect to the pinion I35 and'pin I39. When the nut I45 is tightened upon the pin, the cam I42 is clamped rigidly into fixed position with respect to the pinion. In the arrangement shown, the dial I43 is graduated so as to have the highest point of the cam positioned directly opposite to the zero of the graduations on the dial.
The means for transmitting power from the cam I42 to the arm III comprises a roller I46 rotatably mounted upon the inner face of the arm I I1 opposite to the cam I42. The arrangement is such that the roller I46 is kept in engagement'with the cam I42 by the pull of the spring I23 on the arm. As will be appreciated from -an inspection of Figs. 5 and 5a, when the Upon its pin I33 and the cam I42 are rotated in clockwise direction in Fig. the roller I46 is permitted to stand stationary throughout the major portion of the revolution of the cam, since of the lever II1, the pinion I is actuated by .the teeth I24 for driving the feed roller 16.
Shortly after the parts have reached the position as shown in Fig. 5a, in the continued rotation of the cam I42 in clockwise direction in said figures. the roller I46 is freed from the.
high point of the cam, whereupon the spring I23 gives the operating arm I I1 a quick motion stroke in counterclockwise direction again into the position as shown in Fig. 5. Upon such quick motion stroke of the arm II1, the pinion I21 is driven in counterclockwise direction in said Fig. 5 by the teeth I26, for giving the forwarding rollers 9| and 92 rotary movement in the direction for moving the then gripped copy sheet quickly toward the right into the bite of the drum andthe cooperating impression roller 56. When the copy sheet is gripped between the drum and the impression roller 56, the sheet is pulled forwardly independently of the pinions I25 and I21 andtheir cooperating means, the clutches I28 and I32 being adapted to yield for permitting such free movement of the sheet.
In the preferred construction, the forwarding rollers and their driving means are arranged so as to carry the copy sheet forwardly sufiiciently for causing its leading end portion to be buckled slightly between the forwarding rollers and the platen roller 56 so as to insure that the sheet shall be gripped squarely and evenly by the drum and the platen roller.
vAs will be readily appreciated, the cam I42 is to be adjusted into such position with respect to the pinion I36 as to cause the feed roller 16 and the forwarding rollers 9| and 92 to operate at the desired interval for assuring that the copy sheet shall move into the bite of the drum and pin I53 extending outwardly from the side plate 26. This pinion 42 is provided on its outer face with a. substantially square socket I54 into which the squared hub I55 of a crank I56 extends for rotating the pinion 42, the hub I55 being in the form of a sleeve adapted to slip readily into posithreads in the side plate 26, as isbest shown in its cooperating platen roller in the desired posiof the copy sheet. As the copy sheets are carried forwardly by the drum and impression roller, they pass into position upon a receiving tray I41 removably supported inany suitable man-.
ner underneath the drum 35, as shown in Fig. 3.
For showing the number of copies being made by the use of a master sheet, a counter device is provided comprising a dial I48 rotatably mounted on the outer face of the side plate 26, such dial member being provided with ratchet teeth I48 on its periphery. A dog I50 is pivotally mounted upon the arm H1 in position to engage the ratchet teeth I49 at substantially the end of the downward movement ofthe arm II1, such dog I56 being held yieldingly in operative position by a spring I5I. The arrangement is such that upon each return stroke of the lever III the dial I48 is given a one step movement. A spring latch I52 is provided so as to engage the ratchet teeth I46 for preventing rotation of the dial in reverse direction.
In the construction illustrated, the pinion 42, byrwhich power is applied to the pinion 46 for rotating the drum, is rotatably mounted upon a Fig. 9. The lever I51 comprises a handle I59 at one end extending outwardly through a notch I66 in the flange 21 of said plate 26. A coiled spring I6I connected with the lever I51 and with the plate 26 serves normally. to hold-the lever swung outwardly to the limit of its motion as shown in Fig. 1. At the end of the lever opposite from that at which the handle I59 is located a cross bar portion I62 is provided which is adapted to be carried by the lever inwardly and outwardly along a slot I63 in the side plate, as
shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 9. The arrangement of the parts is such that when the lever is moved inwardly into the position as shown in Fig. 9 against the action of the spring I6I, the cross bar portion I62 is brought into position for enis swung again in counterclockwise direction into the position as shown in Fig. 5, the arm 53 is moved back to normal position by the spring 54 for causing the fingers 5I again to press on the bar 46 for holding a master sheet 49 in position on the drum.
In the construction illustrated, means is provided for holding the trip lever I51 in its shifted operative position as shown in Fig. 9. This means comprises a spring pressed detent I64 carried by the end plate 36 of the drum in position to engage a recess I65 in the inner face of the cross bar portion I62 of the trip lever I51. When the parts come into operative engagement as shown inFig. 9, the detent I64 engages the recess I65 so as to hold the trip lever I51 in turned position against the action of the spring I6I for holding the parts in the position as shown in Fig. 9 with the fingers 5| retracted. After a master'sheet has been inserted into operative position in the groove 45 of the drum, the lever I51 can be retracted manually against the holding power of the detent I64 for permitting the spring 54 to return the fingers 5I to their operative pres- If desired, the parts may be released for a return to their normal position as shown in Fig. 1 by a slight rotary movement of the drum 35 for effecting the required movement of the detent I64 with respect to the recess While the construction and arrangement as above described are preferred, it is to be understood that theinvention is not to be limited thereto except so far as the claims may be so limited, it beingrunderstood that change might well be made in the form and arrangement'of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Iclaim:
i. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame. means for supporting a pile of sheets on said frame, a feed rollerrotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile for feeding the sheet forwardiy,a pair of forwarding roller rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing a sheet from said feed roll]- er, a third sheet actuating means adapted by a gripping engagement with a sheet to pull the sheet forwardly edgewise from said forwarding rollers, means adapted to drive said feed roller intermittently in one direction for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is moved forwardly independtary. movement'in the direction for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is moved forwardly independently, and means adapted shortly after the close of the drive of said feed roller by said intermittently acting driving means to give said forwarding rollers an intermittent rotary movement at substantially increased surface speed as compared with that of said feed roller for continuing the roller.

Ina mechanism of the type described, the d combination of a frame, means for supporting-a ently, and means adapted to drive said forwarding rollers intermittently at substantially increased surfacespeed as compared with that of said feed roller for continuing the forward move ment of said sheet into the grip of said third sheet actuating means and adaptedto yield for permitting the forwarding rollers to rotate free- 13% in the same direction when the sheet is pulled forwardly by said third sheet actuating means.
2. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, means for supporting a pile of sheets on said frame, a feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile for feeding the sheet forwardly, a pair of forwarding rollers rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing a sheet from said feed roller, a third sheet actuating means adapted by a gripping engagement with a sheet to pull the sheet forwardly edgewise from said forwarding rollers, means adapted to drive said feed roller intermittently in one direction for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is moved forwardly independently, and means adapted to drive said forwarding rollers intermittently at substantially increased surface speed as compared with that of said feed roller for continuing the forward movement of said sheet into the grip of said third sheet actuating means and arranged to overdrive the sheet sufflciently for causing the sheet to be bowed slightly between the forwarding rollers and said third sheet actuating means and adapted to yield for permitting the forwarding rollers to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is pulled forwardly by said third sheet actuating 1 means.

In a. mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for supporting a pile of sheets adjacent to said dmm, means for rotating said drum, a platen roller rotatably mounted in impression relationship to said drum, 9. feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheetof said pile for feeding the sheet forwardly toward the drum, a pair of for- 5 warding rollers rotatably-mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing a sheet from said feed roller into the bite of said drum and its cooperating platen roller, means adapted at a predetermined point in the rotation of said drum to give said feed roller an intermittent ropile of sheets on said frame, a feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile for feeding the sheet forwardly, a pair of forwarding rollers rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing a sheet from said feed roller, a third sheet actuating means adapted by a gripping engagement with a sheet to pull the sheet forwardly edgewise from said forwarding rollers, means adapted to drive said feed roller intermittently in one direction for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is moved forwardly independently, means adapted to drive said forwarding rollers intermittently in the direction for continuing the forward movement of said sheet into the grip of said third sheet actuating means and adapted to yield for permitting the forwarding rollers to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is pulled forwardly by said third sheet actuating means, an arm swingingly mounted on said frame, gearing connecting said arm with said feedroller driving means and with said forwarding roller driving means adapted upon astroke of said arm in"'one direction to drive said feed roller for feeding a sheet from the pile and adapt- "ed upon a stroke of the arm in the opposite direction to drive said forwarding rollers for forwarding said sheet to said thirdsheet actuating mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing a sheet from said feed roller, a third sheet actuating means adapted by a gripping engagement with a sheet to pull the sheet forwardly edgewise from said forwarding rollers, means, adapted to drive said feed roller intermittently in one direction for-forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is moved forwardly independently, means adapted to drive said forwarding rollers intermittently in the direction for continuing the forward movement of said sheet into the grip of said third sheet actuating means and adapted to yield for permitting the forwarding rollers to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is pulled forwardly by said third sheet actuating means, a supporting plate removably mounted in position on said frame, an arm swingingly mounted on said supporting plate, means comprising a rotary cam adapted upon each complete revolution of the cam to give said arm a stroke in one direction and a comparatively much more rapid stroke in the opposite direction, and gearing connecting said am with said feed roller driving means and with said forwarding roller driving means adapted upon the slower stroke of said arm to drive said feed roller for feeding a sheet from the pile and adapted upon the more rapid stroke of the arm to drive said forwarding rollers for forwarding said sheet to said third sheet actuating means.
6. In a mechanism of the type described, the
mittently in one direction for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is moved forwardly independently, means adapted to drive said forwarding rollers intermittently in the direction for continuing the forward movement of said sheet into the grip of said third sheet actuating means and adapted to yield for permitting the forwarding rollers to rotate freely in the same direction when the sheet is pulled forwardly by said third sheet actuating means, an arm swingingly mounted on said frame so as to be readily removable therefrom, means comprising a rotary cam and a spring adapted upon each complete revolution of the cam to give said arm a stroke in one direction and a comparatively much more rapid stroke in the opposite direction, and means comprising one-way clutch devices and pinions connecting said arm with said feed roller driving means and with said forwarding roller driving means adapted upon the slower stroke of said arm to drive said feed roller for feeding a sheet from the pile and adapted upon the more rapidstroke of the arm to drive said forwarding rollers for forwarding said sheet to said third sheet actuating means. 7. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for supporting a pile of sheets adjacent to said drum, a platen roller rotatably mounted in impression relationship to said drum, a feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile for feeding a sheet forwardly toward the drum, a pair of forwarding rollers rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing the sheet from said feed roller into the bite of said drum and its cooper ating platen roller, means comprising a cam for said feed roller intermittently for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and for driving said forwarding rollers intermittently for continuing the forward movement of saidsheet into the bite of said drum and its cooperating platen roller, and
spring for giving said arm a return swinging means for adjusting the position of said cam for changing the point in the cycle of movements at which the cam is effective for bringing about the movements of said feed roller and said forwarding rollers.
8. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for supporting a pile of sheets adjacent to said drum, a platen roller rotatably mounted in impression relationship to said drum, a feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile for feeding a sheet forwardly toward the drum, a pair of forwarding rollers rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing the sheetfrom said feed roller into the bite of said drum and its cooperating platen roller, means comprising a cam for driving said feedroller intermittently for forwarding the top sheet into the bite'of said forwarding rollers and for driving saidforwarding rollers intermittently for continuing the forward movement of said sheet into the bite of said drum and its cooperating platen roller, means for adjusting the position of said cam for changing the point in the cycle of movements at which the cam is effective for bringing about the movements of said feed roller and said forwarding rollers, and means connected with said cam and adjustable therewith for showing the position of the cam.
9. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for supporting a pile of sheets adjacent to said drum, a platen roller rotatably mounted in impression relationship to said drum, a feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile'for feeding a sheet forwardly toward the drum, a pair of forwarding rollers rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed rollor for advancing the sheet from said feed roller into the bite of said drum and its cooperating platen roller, a pinion connected with said drum so as to rotate concentrically therewith, a second pinion of the same size rotatably mounted on said frame so as to mesh with said first-named pinion, a pin extending from the outer face of said second pinion, a cam rotatably mounted on said pin, a nut secured by means of screw-threads on said pin for clamping said cam in any desired adjusted position with respect to said second pinion, an arm swingingly mounted on said frame in position for engagement by said cam so as to be swung in one direction by the cam, a coiled movement in the opposite direction, means adapted upon a stroke of said arm in one direction to drive said feed roller in the direction for.
feeding the top sheet into the bite of, said forwarding, rollers, and means adapted upon the stroke of the arm in the opposite direction to drive said forwarding rollers in the direction for continuing the forward movement of said sheet for carrying the sheet into the bite of the drum and its cooperating platen roller.
10. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for rotating said drum, means for pressing a sheet into impression relationship with the drum as the drum rotates soas to cause the sheet to move around with the drum, and forwarding means comprising a roller adapted at a predetermined point in the rotation of said drum to be given an intermittent movement for forwarding a sheet into the grip of the drum and its cooperating impression means at a considerably higher speed than that at which the surface of the drum moves and adapted to run free after the period of intermittent drive for permitting the sheet to be pulled independently by the drum.
11. In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for rotating said drum, a platen roller rotatably mounted in impression relationship to said drum, forwarding rollers rotatably mounted in cooperative relation to each other adjacent to said platen roller, an

In a mechanism of the type described, the combination 'of a frame, a drum rotatably mounted on said frame, means for rotating said drum, a platen roller rotatably mounted in impression relationship to said drum, forwarding rollers rotatably mounted in cooperative relation to each other adjacent to said platen roller,
an arm swingingly mounted on said frame, means comprising a rotary cam and a spring adapted upon each complete revolution of the cam to give said arm a stroke in one direction and a comparatively much more rapid stroke in the opposite direction, means for giving said cam a complete revolution for each complete revolution of the drum, means comprising a one-way clutch device and a pinion connecting said arm with one of said forwarding rollers adapted upon the more rapid stroke of said arm to drive said forwarding rollers for forwarding a sheet into the grip of said drum and its cooperating platen roller, and means for adjusting the position of said cam for changing the point in the revolution of the drum at which the cam is effective for bringing about the movements of said forwarding rollers. p

In a mechanism of the type described, the combination of a frame, means for supporting a pile of sheets on said frame, a feed roller rotatably mounted on said frame so as to engage the top sheet of said pile for feeding the sheet forwardly, a pair of forwarding rollers rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said feed roller for advancing a sheetfrom said feed roller, 8, third sheet actuating means adapted by a gripping engagement with a sheet to pull the sheet forwardly edgewise from said forwarding rollers, means adapted to drive said feed roller intermittently in one direction for forwarding the top sheet into the bite of said forwarding rollers and adapted to yield, for permitting the feed roller to rotate freely in the same direction when the rheet is moved forwardly independently,
mounted on said frame, gearing connecting said arm with said feed roller driving means and with said forwarding roller driving means adapted upon a stroke of said arm in one direction to drive said feed roller for feeding a sheet from the pile and adapted upon a stroke of the arm in the opposite direction to drive said forwarding rollers for forwarding said sheet to said third sheet actuating means, means for giving said arm intermittent swinging movements for driving said rollers, a counter dial rotatably mounted on said frame adjacent to said arm and having ratchet teeth on its periphery, and means comprising a dog mounted on said arm adapted by supporting member, means for supporting saidv feed roller rotatably in position above the table transversely thereof between said supporting members so as to engage the pile of sheets for limiting the upward movement of the table and .mounted in impression relationship to said drum,
means comprising a forwarding roller rotatably mounted on said frame for advancing a copy sheet to said drum and platen roller, a pinion rotatably mounted on said frame, means for driving said pinion in unison with said drum, a pin projecting from the face of said pinion concentrically thereof, a cam member rotatably mounted on said pin, means for clamping said cam fixedly in position on said pin in any desired adjusted position with respect to said pinion, an arm movably mounted on said frame in position to' be actuated by said cam, and means actuated by an operative stroke of said arm for driving said forwarding roller.
