Abstract

389,813. Charging and discharging condensers. BRASCH, A., 4, Clausewitzstrasse, Charlottenburg, and LANGE, F., 7, Reichstagsufer, both in Berlin. Sept. 11, 1931, No. 25565. Convention date, Sept. 11, 1930. [Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv).] Condensers.-An installation for generating shock voltages, of the kind described in Specification 344,862, in which condensers q are charged in series with resistances f and discharged in series through spark gaps, is immersed wholly or partly in an insulating liquid so that a compact construction may be obtained by utilizing the delay in breakdown which is a property of the dielectric. The spark gaps are in separate gas-filled chambers g which may be maintained under pressure ; by connecting all chambers to a common pressure source i, regulation and measurement of the voltage may be obtained by varying and measuring the gas pressure. The insulating liquid may be put under pressure, Fig. 2, to prevent leakage discharge at the condensers and to increase the dielectric strength of the solid dielectric ; the spark gap chambers g may in this case communicate with the liquid, and voltage regulation then be obtained by varying the liquid pressure. The installation may be arranged in an inner chamber d containing a high-grade insulating liquid, this chamber being enclosed in an outer container a with a lower quality dielectric, such as water. A series spark gap h is disposed in the inner chamber to keep the charging voltage from the poor dielectric. Objects, such as insulators l, to be tested may be placed within the container and an external insulating bushing avoided. A discharge tube similarly placed may be used to irradiate objects through a suitable window.
