Abstract

389,535. Refrigerators. BOWMAN, J. A. H., 117, Casilla, Vina del Mar, Chile. Dec. 19, 1931, No. 15599. [Class 29.] A container for storing food &c. comprising a jacketed storage chamber and means for exhausting air from the chamber and the jacket is provided with means for admitting air to the jacket without breaking the vacuum in the chamber. In an arrangement in which a storage box 2 is enclosed in a lined box 5, air exhaust and admission connections 17, 22 respectively and thermometers 73, 74 are provided on each of the boxes. The outer box and its lining may be made of pressed corkboard, artificial resin, porcelain, reinforced glass, celluloid, or aluminium and may be lined internally with waterproof paper or coated both internally and externally with waterproof or heatinsulating paint. Fig. 9 shows a cabinet, comprising a sheet copper storage compartment 33 enclosed in a casing 36 having inner and outer walls the space between which is packed with asbestos &c. The storage compartment and the space 35 around it are connected through valved-pipes 42, 43 to a common exhaust pump 45 driven by an electric motor the current to which is controlled by thermal switches 54 in the compartment 33 and the space 35. A two-way valve 49 having a connection 50 to the atmosphere controls the admission of air to the compartment or the space 35. Ice may be produced in a vessel 60 having a connection 61 to the pump 45.
