[Class 29] Refrigerator boxes or cases for transport comprise concentric metal vessels 1, 2, the outer being lined and the inner covered with solid insulation such as vulcanized expanded rubber, preferably cemented in place and covered by metal foil, as described in Specification 401,670, and the two vessels being held firmly in spaced relation by wood or vulcanite wedges 12 and end pieces 3 of wood. The storage compartments 14 are located in the middle of the inner vessel and refrigerant 16 such as solid carbon dioxide is located in containers 9 in end compartments 15, the refrigerant being in thermal contact with removable partitions 6 at the ends of the storage compartment and insulated at the other faces of its containers. Access to the refrigerant and to the storage space is provided by end doors 4, and preferably the refrigerant containers are held firmly in place by end packing elements. The refrigerant containers may be mounted in upright arms 8, Fig. 6, in a cage 7, the arms 8 being adjustable by a screw from the exterior or by a thermostat to bring the refrigerant more or less into contact with the partitions. Heat insulating pads may be placed between the refrigerant and the panels 6 to lessen the cooling effect. The evolved gas may circulate between the vessels, the interspace being packed with kapoc &c. Where a thermostat is used, its sensitive element is in contact with the external wall so as to respond to variations of atmospheric condition.
