Abstract

389,102. Thermionic valve circuits. DALTON, J. W., 16, Abbott Avenue, Wimbledon, London. June 9, 1931, No. 16812. [Class 40 (v).] In a process and apparatus for producing engraved surfaces with the aid of a mechanical cutter, e.g. a drill, the depth of cut is regulated by particular coils 10 which are energized by variations in the amount of light reflected in accordance with the variations in tone from the original on to the photo-electric cell 48. An interrupter disc 51 renders this light intermittent and the original '30 and block 31 to be engraved are mounted on a common shaft driven by the motor 26. The varying current in the cell 48 is transmitted after suitable amplification to a rectifier 46 and thence to a resistance, from which tappings are taken as shown to the grids of the valves 35 .. 35d, which are preferably of the type known under the Registered Trade Mark " Thyratron," one or more of which are rendered conducting according to the amount of light reflected from the original 30, whereby is completed the circuit of one or more of the actuating coils 10 of the cutter A. A cut is thus made of which the depth varies in accordance with the depth of tone of the original. The circuit may be modified by the use of alternating current, and by using different valves. To stop the discharge through the valves which has been started by raising the grid potential, the anode potential is reduced either by means of the rotary contact maker 32 included in the plate circuit; by using an alternating current source instead of a direct current source, or by applying to the plate a steady potential and a superposed varying potential obtained from the output of another valve to the grid of which is connected an alternator and battery. Alternatively, the means for scanning the subject and controlling the current flow to the electromagnets operating the drill may be of the kind described in Specification 351,462. For the capacity effect, an electrode plate is held in suitable spaced relation with the engraved plate so as to secure between the two a condenser effect. This variable capacity is in the grid circuit of a valve inductively coupled with the circuit of an oscillator valve, and the former valve serves to rectify the oscillating current set up, which, after amplification, is applied as before to a resistance having leads connected to the grids of the valves for operating the cutter.
