Abstract

Alkali-beryllium double fluorides are decomposed by heating with an alkali carbonate, say to 525-550 DEG C., the product being leached with hot water to separate alkali fluoride from beryllium oxide. In carrying out the process a small amount of alkali carbonate may first be added to a solution of the double fluoride to precipitate impurities which are removed, the main addition of carbonate be then made, and the mixed solution be evaporated to dryness and calcined. Alkali carbonate used in the process may be replaced by other salts such as alkali oxalate or acetate. If the alkali fluoride solution obtained is alkaline, it is neutralized with hydrofluoric acid before being crystallized.
