Abstract
388,836. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Coolidge, W. D. ; 36, Bedford Road, Schenectady, New York, U.S.A.) Sept. 23, 1931, No. 26577. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1930. [Class 39 (i).] A window for a cathode-ray, R÷ntgen-ray, or alpha-ray tube is prepared from a blank of aluminium or beryllium by deformation by cold flow under pressure so as to form thin areas allowing the passage of the rays and bordered by thicker areas offering sufficient support to resist atmospheric pressure ; the window may have an additional supporting structure and is sealed to a support by soldering. The blank 7, Fig. 2, is held on a block 10 by a clamp consisting of a rod 15 which slides in bearings 16 carried by clamped supports 17, and is forced downwards by a spring 18 bearing against an adjustable collar 19. A very thin ring of aluminium solder 9<1>, without flux, is applied to the blank, and the block is heated by a burner 14. Rods 13 facilitate rotation of the block. The blank is removed from the clamp and soft solder with a minimum of non- corrosive flux is applied to the aluminium solder. Grooves and projections are formed in the blank by means of a grooved punch 8, Fig. 4, inserted between a ram 24, Fig. 5, and the blank which is mounted on a metal block 221. A ring 9 on the punch prevents buckling of the blank. The thickness of the bottom of the grooves is less than one-half mil. A copper cap 25, with a central aperture 27, is secured to the anode 5 by hard silver solder, the blank is pressed with the soldered edge against the cap, and a flame is played about the periphery to melt the solder. Solder 28 may also be applied around the cap. In a modification, the blank is formed by counter-boring an aluminium block which is butt-welded to a flanged copper cap soldered to the anode. An additional supporting grid may be provided, with the ribs at right-angles to those of the window.
