Abstract
388,638. Respirators. LEDUC, J. E., 516, Bloomfield Avenue, Outremont, Quebec, Canada. June 21, 1932, No. 17514. [Class 81 (ii).] A respiratory mask, particularly for use by surgeons, comprises a stiff frame of cardboard, celluloid or the like, a gauze or fabric cover, of larger area than the frame and having its marginal portions folded back thereover to provide chambers for loose fibrous filtering elements, and fastening means connected with the frame. The frame 20 has a central section 21 which is stamped to form a series of shallow pockets 22, while a stamping 26 accommodates the nose. Cuts and scorings, for example 24, 25, facilitate shaping of the frame. On the outside of the section 21, a coating 29 of adhesive such as wax or collodium is applied, while the inner margin is similarly coated at 30. A sheet 32 of gauze covers the outside of the frame and is folded over at the edges and secured to the adhesive 30. A baffle member 36, for example of pressed cotton and formed with openings 37, 38, is secured over the central section 21. Tapes 34, enclosed within the covering 32, pass through evelets 27 and rings 43 and are tensioned to bend the mask into a cup-shaped form fitting the nose and mouth. The marginal chambers formed in the covering sheet are loosely filled with filtering elements 40 which may be balls or cylindrical rolls of absorbent cotton. These may be positioned during the folding of the sheet.
