Abstract

538,971. Surgical appliances &c. MARTOS, Z. March 9, 1940, No. 4470. Convention date, March 30, 1939. [Class 81 (ii)] [Also in Groups I, VII and XVII] A flat or other shaped membrane 1, Fig. 1, of rubber or similar elastic impermeable material, has a rim 2 with an adhesive coating of rubber or other soft adhesive, the rim being protected by a removable covering 3 of tulle or other fabric. The membrane may be used for covering a medical dressing and may be provided with rim reinforcements, 4, 5, Fig. 2, or with local reinforcements 6 inside the rim. The latter may serve for smoothing out wrinkles when the membrane is used without a dressing for cosmetic purposes, or it may be provided with a hole for the insertion of a thermometer or the like or for receiving an air filter, in which case the membrane may serve as a substitute for a gas mask. The membrane may be in the form of a utricle or pileus, Fig. 6, when it may be employed for collecting purulent matter, or a liquid, e.g. a trickling liquid in industry. In this form, the inside of the adhesive border 11 of the membrane 10 is covered by the strip of fabric 12, while the outside is provided with a reinforcing strip 13. The lower margin of the latter may be scalloped. The membrane may also be folded in the manner of an accordion, or it may be rolled up. In this form the membrane may be employed as a finger stall for spinners, physicians &c. A larger form 1 of pileus 24, Fig. 10, may be used as a urine collector. In this form, reinforcing rings 25, 26 are provided on both sides of the rim of the pileus, the inner ring being provided with an adhesive coating and tulle covering 27. In this form, the rim of the membrane is perforated by a small rubber tube 28 to permit the evacuation of the air on the rapid filling of the pileus.
