Abstract

387,378. Leather board. PRESTON, E. F., and STOWE, D. and STOWE, L., (trading as STOWE & CO.. E.), 14, Milton Road, Stowmarket, Suffolk. Aug. 4, 1931, No. 22127. [Classes 96 and 140.] Leather board is made by reducing scrap leather to a pulp in water with a suitable adhesive, pressing the pulp to form a core sheet, and then interposing the core sheet between sheets of leather secured thereto by adhesive and pressure. The apparatus comprises a feed table 1, Fig. 1, from which scrap leather is fed over a sieve 2 and a magnetic separator 3 to remove dust and metal scraps, to a cutting machine 4, and thence into a beater or pulping machine 5 where it is reduced to pulp in water. The pulp is mixed with adhesive in a tank 6, and pumped to a vat 7 containing a revolving gauze drum 8 upon which it is deposited. The deposit is removed by an endless blanket 9 of felt or like material held against the drum 8 by a weighted roller 10. The blanket picks up the sheeted pulp and carries it between pressure rolls 11, 12. The pulp collects on the roller 12, from which it is stripped by known means on to a table 22. The sheet of pulp is then coated with adhesive, such as a solution of boiled starch, placed between two leather sheets and pressed to form a composite board. The roller 12 may be fitted with an electrical device for indicating when sufficient pulp has collected thereon. The roller 12, Fig. 2, is floatably mounted, and a metal rod 24 resting on the axle of the roller slides in guides 26. Above the rod is a pointer 29 held down by a spring against an adjusting screw 32 by which it may be set to indicate the desired thickness on a scale 30. When the roller 12 has collected the desired thickness of pulp, the rod 24 is raised to make contact with the pointer and complete a circuit including a lamp 28. A water spray 16, Fig. 1, and brush 17 may be provided for cleaning the drum 8. Waterproofing material such as latex may be sprayed on to the pulp on the felt from a spray 21. The blanket 9 may be cleaned by being passed through a bath 18 and dried by beaters 19 and rollers 20.
