386,137. Flywheels. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Hanna, C. R. ; 2001, Frankilla Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) Feb. 1, 1932, No. 2998. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1931. [Class 122 (i).] A flywheel 7 is rigidly mounted upon the shaft 9 and driver by the bevel gearing through a spring 11. A second flywheel 13 is loosely mounted upon the shaft 9 and pressed into engagement with a frictional coupling 15 by a spring 23. The coupling is lubricated by lubricant retained in a cavity 19. It is shown mathematically that for critical damping the moment of inertia of the flywheel 13 must be greater than eight times that of the flywheel 7. It is also shown that the resistance of the frictional coupling must, for critical damping, be less than [Mn<2>[n<2>+20n-8+ L{(n-8)< 3> }<¢> ]/8k(n+l)<3>]¢ but greater than [Mn<2>[n<2> + 20n - 8 - {n(n - 8)< 3> }<¢>]/8k(n + 1)<3>]<¢> where M is the moment of inertia of flywheel 7, nM is the moment of inertia of flywheel 13 and k is the compliance of the spring.
