385,843. Hardening glass. COMPAGNIES REUNIES DES GLACES ET VERRES SPECIAUX DU NORD DE LA FRANCE, Boussois-sur-Sambre, Nord, France. May 21, 1932, No. 14516. Convention date, Sept. 2, 1931. [Class 56.] Relates to apparatus for hardening sheets of glass by means of air jets directed on to the surfaces of the glass while it is hot, the jets being kept in motion while the glass is cooling in order to obtain uniformity of hardening. According to the invention, the jets are moved with a circular movement of small amplitude in planes parallel to the surfaces of the sheet. The air jets may proceed from small holes formed in a casing or in a grid G made up of pipes which are supported by supply pipes 1. A yoke 5, to which the upper end of each pipe 1 is secured, forms the strap of an eccentric sheave which is bolted to the end of a shaft 8. The lower end of the tube 1 is pivoted to a crank 18 on the end of a shaft 19, and the shafts 8, 19 are rotated in unison with one another by a motor 20. Two of such devices are used, as shown, and the sheet 27 of glass to be hardened is inserted between them. The rotation of the shafts 8, 19 causes the grids G to move with a circular motion, and the jets of air move over the surfaces of the glass. The support 29 from which the sheet of glass is suspended is counterbalanced by suitable weights.
