Abstract
385,689. Coin-freed apparatus. FISHBURN, J. E., 39, St. James' Street, London, and WEBB, C. F., 33, Kenton Park Avenue, Kenton Park, Middlesex. Oct. 13, 1931, No. 28465. [Class 27.] Testing coins.-A coin-testing device, particularly for coin-freed machines, comprises a balance 1, 2, Fig. 1, pivoted at 3 and provided with an adjustable counterweight 5, the arm 1 having a platform 8 which receives coins from a shoot 14. If the coin is of proper weight the arm 1 moves down until the platform 8 is in alignment with a shoot 16 into which a correct coin passes. If the surface of the coin is smooth and there is no rim, thereby providing insufficient friction, sufficient potential energy will be developed in the coin to cause it, as it moves with the balance, to slide off into a return shoot 15 located above the shoot 16. The platform 8 is attached to the arm 1 by a screw 9, Fig. 3, its inclination being adjusted by screws 11 and knife-edges 12. Pins 13 position a coin correctly on the platform so that a ring of steel balls 10 fit just inside the rim of the coin and engage frictionally with the surface of the coin. When the platform 8 is aligned with the shoot 16, a pair of extensions 17 of the shoot pass through slots in the platform and raise the coin so that it can slide off. In a modification, Fig. 6, a ring of hardened steel points 10a are provided which engage within the ring of lettering 18a on the coin.
