Abstract
354,710. Coin-freed apparatus. HIGGINS, J. A., Aigden, Kingsley Grove, Audenshaw,. near Manchester. April 10, 1930, Nos. 11363/30 and 650/31. [Class 27.] Testing coins.-In weight-selector mechanism of the kind comprising a counter-balanced runway and a lip at the end of the runway for a coin to overrun or fail to over-run according to the level of the runway when the coin reaches the lip, balancechanging mechanism is connected to the runway. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4a, 4b, coins are led down a shoot 21 and slide on their face under an extension 27 down a lever 23. A coin below a minimum weight does not tilt the lever sufficiently and passes over a plate 30 into a return shoot 33a. A heavy coin or one of correct weight tilts the lever 23 so far that as it leaves the lever it engages the plate 30 and is tipped down a shoot 31 on to an inclined ledge 32 leading to over-weight selector mechanism. The latter comprises an inclined bar 35, Figs. 4a, 4b, having a rejector rib 42 and a slot 43 with a groove 44 extending therefrom, A balanced member 48 with' a runway 49 is pivoted on a spindle 50, supported in brackets 47 secured to the bar 35, and has a balance-changing device consisting of a ball 57 in a tube 54 adjustably secured by a screw 55. A coin is led to the runway 49 and if of correct diameter and weight is supported between a guide 45 and ledge 41 and passes over a lip.53 on a shoot 52 into the latter. If the balance 48 is.tilted too far or the coin is too small in diameter the coin will either fall outwards into a hopper 33 leading to the return shoot 33a or will lean back under the' ledge 41. In the latter case it will engage the inclined leading end of the rib 42 and be deflected off the runway 49 into the return shoot. If a heavy' coin runs unimpeded along the runway the latter is tilted so that the coin is unable to pass over the lip 53 and falls back on the runway. The ball 57 in the tube 54 then reaches the end of its travel and the runway drops still further. A screw 64 on an arm 63 secured to the member 48 then projects a cam 61 on a rejector 60, pivoted on screws 58 in a bracket 59 secured to the bar 35, through the slot 43 into the coin path and pushes the coin off the runway into the hopper 33. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the coin falls on to a lever 129 which is pivoted at 128 between plates 124, 125, and is provided with a rolling ball device 131. A coin below a minimum weight over-runs a lip 41 on a pivoted member 138, mounted in an opening in the plate 124, and falls into a return shoot 155. A coin over the minimum weight depresses the lever 129 and falls beneath the lip 141 on to an incline 148 leading to a lever 150 having a rolling ball device 160. A heavy coin is rejected by falling beneath a bent-in portion 151 of the plate 125 on to an incline 153 leading to a return shoot 154. A coin of correct weight over-runs the lip 151 and falls down a shoot 152. A pivoted member similar to the member 138 mav be substituted for the bent-in portion 151. When the lever 129 has assumed a pre-determined tilt it engages a pin 145 on a lever 144 and this lever then engages a pin 142 on the member 138 to give the latter a quick upward tilt. A pivoted over-balance weight or spirit level may be used instead of the rolling ball device.
