Class 27 A coin-testing device comprises a vertical slot 14 formed between plates 15, 16, a laterally inclined slot 20 formed in the plate 16, and a pivoted plate 25 normally urged into a position in which its inclined upper face 29 projects through the slot 20 to form an obstruction preventing an incorrect coin from falling through the slot 14 but causes it to roll sideways therefrom to a rejection shoot. The plate 25 is held in this blocking position by a latch comprising a bell-crank 36 having a downwardly extending arm 37 which latches the end 28 of the plate 25. The plate swings clear of the slot 14 under the weight of a correct coin which is also tested for diameter by the plate-latching means as it falls towards the inclined face 29 of the plate 25, the coin being checked between a fixed abutment 34 and a pin 33 on the bell-crank 36. When in the plate-latching position, the distance between the gauging points 33, 34 is slightly less than the diameter of a correct coin, the weight of which is sufficient to move the pin 33 against the influence of a counterweight 35, thereby moving the end 37 of the downward arm of the bell-crank out of contact with the end 28 of the plate 25 in which a detent is formed to allow the plate to pivot clear of the latching means under the weight of the coin on its inclined face and thus to pass the coin into the operative part of the apparatus. Coins of incorrect diameter or weight are thus obstructed by the plate 25 and roll laterally to the rejection shoot. The device is particularly applicable to the apparatus described in Specification 810,031 for receiving coins in a shoot 10 and separating them into various denominations having indexed runways 11, 12 in which the rate of travel of the separate coin is controlled by permanent magnets 13, 18.
