Abstract

385,287. Cramps. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS, 2501, North Keeler Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A. March 18, 1931, No. 8359. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 61 (ii).] A clamping device adapted for attachment to a jig or the like has means for an initial rapid and final slow tightening adjustment. A jig frame 13 is screwed at 21 to receive the body 15 of a clamping device according to the invention the bore of the body of the device is smooth over the lower portion and an inwardly extending flange 25 forms a box-like housing for the end of a clamping rod 27 which is free to slide in the bore but prevented from rotation by a pin 39. A spring 31 maintains contact between the clamping rod and an operating screw 47, the contacting faces being provided with one or more corresponding cam projections and recesses 57 and 41 respectively, to give a rapid feed to the rod during part of a revolution of the handle 55 and a final slow tightening feed according to the pitch of the screw 49. A modification of the device for a table clamp is shown in Fig. 5, in which the bush 29; carrying the cam recesses, is made adjustable by providing equally spaced holes 63 into which fit a peg 64 carried by a washer 65 and passing through the body of the clamp. A further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), comprises a split clamping ring provided with a tightening device similar to the above.
