[Class 12 (i).] A ball-race comprises two similar discs or strips 3 of wear-resisting material, such as spring steel, the free edges of which form a guide-track for the balls 4, the opposite edges of the strips being held in grooves in the casing 1. The free edges of the strips may be obliquely machined to conform to the balls. As shown in Fig. 3, an optical instrument may comprise a slide 11 mounted on a member 7 by bearings 14 as described above, the member 7 being carried on a base 6 by similar bearings 10. The slide 7 may be traversed by a rack and pinion 12 (with or without a locking screw 13), and the member 7 by a pinion 8 (with or without a locking-screw 9) engaging a rack below the fixed base 6.
