Abstract

Artificial fibres having an irregular surface, a cellular structure and generally the characteristics of wool, are obtained by the addition to the coagulation liquid through which the bundles of extruded filaments pass in substantially straight lines, of finely divided insoluble substances, preferably such as have sharp edges or a large surface, for example, infusorial earth, powdered glass or carborundum, precipitated silicon oxide, fullers earth, decolourizing clays, and finely divided resins or artificial resins. The suspended particles may or may not adhere permanently to the filaments. Finely divided substances may also be suspended in the spinning solution; and it is preferred that these shall be different in size, shape, and physical conditions from those contained in the coagulation liquid. Dispersion of the particles may be assisted by the addition of sulphonated fats or fatty acids; and the effect of the added substances may be improved by the addition of adhesive substances such as 3-oxytrimethylene-1,2-sulphide. In examples solutions of viscose, cuprammonia cellulose and cellulose acetate are employed for the spinning. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the dispersion of solid or liquid substances in the form of smoke or mist in the heated air used in the spinning of nitrocellulose filaments. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
