[Classes 16 and 146 (i).] A book - keeping appliance for writing in duplicate comprises a supporting - plate 1, Fig. 2, for a pad of record sheets, means for clamping the pad on the supporting- plate, and a backing- sheet 3, for insertion between the record sheets, mounted on the supporting-plate by rigid arms hinged to the backing-sheet and to the supporting-plate. The plate 1 may be made of aluminium and is provided with filing-posts 2 to fit corresponding holes in the record sheets. The clamping-means 5, 6, 7 for the record sheets is similar to that described in Specification 309,248, [Class 16, Books &c.]. The backing-sheet 3 may be made of metal, celluloid, &c., and is provided along its left-hand edge with stop or registration means consisting of a shoulder formed by a marginal strip 4, which may be a separate strip of metal, celluloid or the like fastened or cemented to the sheet 3, or a portion of the sheet 3 itself bent over and pressed against the upper surface. If desired, instead of the marginal strip a row of pins may be provided, or projections may be stamped up from the sheet 3. The stop or registration means serves to register the position of account sheets or individual cards placed on the backing- sheet 3 to receive a copy of writing made on the record sheets. The sheet 3 is hinged to the plate I by means of wire arms 12 bent at rightangles at their ends to engage under bearing straps riveted to the corners of the sheet 3, and beneath the plate 1 at points spaced inwardly from its right-hand edge. The sheet 3 is thus capable of a transverse movement in relation to the plate 1 and also of an angular movement about the right-hand edge. In a modification, the backing-sheet 3, Fig. 6, is capable of a longitudinal movement relative to the plate 1 and an angular movement about the right-hand edge. Each hinge connection between the sheet 3 and plate 1 comprises a flat metal arm 13 hinged at 14 to the end edges of the plate 1, and hinged at 15 to a triangular plate 16 in turn hinged at 17 to the sheet 3. The whole appliance may be fastened at its right-hand edge in the centre of a cover consisting of a leather folder having a flap wide enough to cover the back of the appliance and provided with a metal hook passing through slots in the flap and attached to a short length of elastic secured on the inside of the flap. This hook is adapted to engage over the left-hand edge of the appliance. Used record sheets may be folded round the left-hand edge of the plate 1 and inserted beneath the flap for protection. The top flap of the folder is adapted to be folded over the top record sheet when the appliance is not in use. The record sheets may be carbonized on their backs, or separate sheets of carbon paper may be used.
