Abstract
383,566. Motors. SULZERFRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland. May 23, 1932, No. 14579. Convention date, May 23, 1931. [Class 35.] Enveloping in special media.-Apparatus, such as electric motors, mounted in a bell submerged in liquid and kept from contact with the liquid by the gas pressure in the bell, are provided with means for generating gas in the bell to maintain the pressure. The Figure shows a motor b mounted in a bell h driving a centrifugal pump a. The apparatus is suspended in a bore-hole and water can enter through an opening and is electrolyzed between electrodes o, p. The negative electrode o is mounted within the bell so that the hydrogen generated collects in the bell, and the positive electrode p is mounted outside so that the oxygen has no access to the motor. The portions of the bell adjacent to the electrodes are covered with insulating enamel. When sufficient hydrogen is collected in the bell the water is forced below the level of the electrode o and generation of hydrogen ceases. In a modification the hydrogen is generated chemically by the action of the water on a rod of aluminium with an amalgamated surface which is fed from above as required. In a further modification the apparatus is immersed in petroleum and vapour is generated by the petroleum coming in contact with a heated platinum wire.
