Abstract
383,354. Vehicle wheel and axle bearings. ALLEN & SONS (TIPTON), Ltd., W. G. and JONES, W. H., Princes End, Tipton, Staffordshire. Sept. 24, 1931, No. 26618. [Class 12 (i).] In a wheel and axle assembly of the Rowbotham type the plain bearing between the wheel and the axle, when worn, is converted into a roller bearing by machining the wheel sleeve d and the axle journal f and inserting bearing rollers therebetween. As shown, the inner portion d<3> of the sleeve d is of greater diameter than the outer portion d<2>, and the end portion f<3> of the axle is of smaller diameter than the inner portion f<2>, and two sets of roller bearings are utilized. This construction requires only slight machining of the parts d<2>, f<2>. The sleeve portion d<3> is strengthened by a ring h, welded thereto, which carries a packing-ring i engaging a collar j welded to the axle. End thrust is taken in one direction by the abutment of the axle end o with the wheel cap e and in the opposite direction by the abutment of a washer g on the axle with the end of the sleeve portion d<2>, a floating washer g<2> being inserted between the parts.
